Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST, Minister Park Yang-woo) selected Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) as graduate schools of convergence/complexity in sports industry along with the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (KSPO, Chairman Cho Jae-ki).
The graduate school of convergence/complexity in sports industry is a project to train key master's-level talent in the field by running multidisciplinary curriculums such as "sports+engineering," "sports+medicine" and "sports+law."
Since last March, MCST has received applications from 14 universities after announcing its project to select graduate schools of convergence/complexity in sports industry, followed by evaluation of presentations and on-site inspections, and finally selected two courses at SKKU (graduate school of sport interaction) and POSTECH (graduate school of sport AIX).
Based on sport science, SKKU will run a sports interaction science (SIS) course which integrates computer engineering, software, design and social science, etc. Based on AI (Artificial Intelligence), which is a key technology in the fourth industry, POSTECH will provide professional education in three areas: ▲big data analysis, ▲sports multimedia, ▲next generation sports convergence technology.
Both graduate programs will be run entirely by state-funded scholarship, and will consist of a total of four semesters.
The guidelines for recruiting new students will be announced after June through MCST (www.mcst.go.kr), KSPO (www.kspo.or.kr) and these schools' internet homepage.
"There is a path to become a human resource in the field of sports convergence/complexity that will lead the innovation of the sports industry. We expect the participation of students majoring in sports, as well as students majoring in engineering, social science, design, etc." said a policy officer of MCST.
